My Grandmother Pieteriza Cilliers Van Ellewee was born on the 8th of November (7.10.01) 1901 in Van Rhynsdorp, Cape, South Africa. Her mother was Christina Philipina Magrieta Truter (on photo) (b. 21.10.1861 in Clanwilliam, Cape Provence, S. A. – d. 8.12.1945) Her father was Stephanus Petrus Van Ellewee (on photo) (b. 24.9.1926 in Clanwilliam, Cape Provence, S.A. – d. 3.3.1927) She came from a family of eight children. Her siblings were Petronella Johanna, Stephanus Jourdan, Maria Jacoba, Daniel (Danie) Truter, Sarah Deborah, Frans (Fanie) Johannes (on photo) and Johanna Petronella (on photo). Because they lived on a farm, her birth was registered later, that is why her Birth certificate states that she was born on a later date.
Her second name Cilliers probably comes from an ancestor named Sarah Elizabeth Cilliers (b. 2.3.1830)
She was born during the second Boer war. ” There were two Boer wars, one from December 16, 1880 – March 23, 1881 and the second from October 11, 1899 -May 31, 1902 both between the British and the settlers of Dutch, French and German origin (called Boers, Afrikaners or Voortrekkers) in South Africa that put an end to the two independent republics that they had founded. ” – Quoted from: Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia.

Pietereza was a schoolteacher at a Private School. Pietereza & Jan had two children Petrus Johannes (2.1.1932 Clanwilliam, Cape Provence, S. A.) and Christina P. M. (Chrissie) (b. 5.7.1936 – d. 21.6.1939) Pietereza and Jan had two grandchildren Linda (b. 27.3.1955 Germiston, South-Africa ) and Patricia (b. 9.4.1967 Stilfontein, South-Africa ) My grandmother lived to see her Great Grandchild Lionel Charles Brits (b. 5.9.1982, in Empangeni, Zululand, South-Africa).
My son, husband, father and I saw my grandmother at an old age home a few months before she passed away and she was as sharp as ever. Pieteriza passed away on the 7 th July 92 in Brakpan, South – Africa at the ripe age of 91. Her grand-child, her son Petrus Johannes and her grandchild’s father were among the pall bearers at her funeral which was held in Brakpan Cemetery, Brakpan, South-Africa.
A few years after she passed away, my father Petrus Johannes Smit gave me photos, negatives and mementos that he got from her. (Grandmother’s Cards) We also took digital photos of some of the old documents and photos that he has in he’s possession. My son discovered her name and ancestors on the internet site Ancestry.com. From notes that my father had made in he’s conversations with her and from this Web-site, I was able to draw up a family tree.
