Brandy Tart

(South – African dessert)




250 g Dates

1 1/4 c. Sugar

1 t. Baking soda

1 Deserts. Butter

1 cup Boiling water

3/4 c. Water

1/2 c Butter or margarine

1 t. Vanilla

1 c. Sugar

Pinch salt

2 Eggs Beaten

1/2 c. Brandy

2 c Flour

1 t Baking Powder

1/2 t Salt

1 c Chopped Walnuts


1. Cut the dates in small pieces. It helps to dip the knife or scissors into a cup of hot water now and then.

2. Add the Baking soda and the boiled water to half of the dates in a mixing bowl, stir and let cool down.

3. Beat the butter and sugar well together until creamy in another mixing bowl.

4. Add the beaten eggs to the sugar butter mix and mix well.

5. Sift the dry ingredients (Flour, sugar, baking powder and salt) together. Add to butter sugar mix.

6. Mix well together and fold into date and baking soda mixture. .

7. Mix the chopped dates and nuts.

8. Mix well together.

9. Pour into a large ovenproof dish or two small ones with a diameter of 22 cm each.

10. Bake 30- 40 min. in a moderate oven 180 degrees C ( 350 degrees F)

11. Test to see if cooked


1. Boil the first three ingredients together for 5 min.

2. Remove from heat and add Vanilla, salt and brandy.

3. Stir well. Pour over desert when it comes out the oven.

4. Serve hot or cold with whipped cream or custard.
